Dental anxiety is more common than most people think, and sedation is a safe, effective way to manage it.
Minimal sedation is the most widely used option, typically administered orally. The patient remains awake, breathing normally, and able to respond throughout the appointment. Nitrous oxide may also be used at this level.
Moderate sedation can be taken orally or given intravenously. Patients are conscious and responsive, but more deeply relaxed. No breathing assistance is needed.
Deep sedation produces a much heavier state of relaxation. Patients may need some assistance breathing and will generally have little to no memory of the procedure afterward.
